Pompey hope to settle tax bill before Wednesday
Pompey hope an offer of £1.8m will save them from administration after a day of talks with the tax man.
The club confirmed they will ask for more time to find cash to repay its debt to HMRC.
A Pompey spokesman confirmed to The News talks between lawyers for HMRC and the club took place yesterday and will continue today.
'We are hopeful we will be able to reach a financial settlement with them to avoid the winding-up order,' he said.
Pompey are believed to have offered a lump sum to HMRC, thought to be in the region of 1.8m.
They now hope HMRC will accept a plan to restructure their debt to pay back the remainder of the money they owe in the months ahead.
This includes any money future owners of the club can bring in.
It is also believed that several creditors who had supported HMRC's winding-up petiton have all been dealt with.
Although they have not been completely paid off the club has managed to agree terms on how they will restructure their debts with them.
Peter Storrie, who has been charged with the day-to-day running of the club, said: 'Our priority is tomorrow's court date. Our objective, now the new owner is in place, is to seek from the courts a stay of the winding-up order.
'We need time for a new buyer to come in and then we will be in a position to pay. If the Revenue winds this club up, then they will get nothing, and that can't be the right answer.'
