Appy: We did everything we could

Michael Appleton insisted he did the best he possibly could for Pompey amid the club’s chaotic circumstances.

The Blues lost their manager to Blackpool last night, along with first-team coach Ashley Westwood.

It leaves Guy Whittingham in charge for Saturday’s crucial trip to struggling Bury.

For Appleton, his departure brings the curtain down on an eventful and often-maddening maiden job in management.

He said: ‘It was difficult, but we soldiered on and tried to do the best we could possibly do.

‘It would literally make people’s eyes water, some of the stuff that’s gone on down there.

‘From the summer, I had to put a team together less than 48 hours before the opening game of the season.

‘That was a bit of a challenge, to say the least.

‘Having players on month-to-month contracts and only having 20 players was difficult.

‘It just became a situation of putting square pegs in round holes, day in, day out, week-in, week out.’
