Pompey took a giant step towards securing their place in the Football League today with a 4-1 demolition of Dagenham & Redbridge.

Danny Hollands, a double from Michael Drennan, and a late Jed Wallace effort did the damage as Andy Awford’s men served up a display of outstanding attacking menace at Victoria Road.

The margin of victory should have been greater as the Blues carved out chance after chance against the Daggers.

Pompey hit the post twice, had a header cleared off the line and missed a three-on-one opportunity in a rampant first 45 minutes.

It took just three minutes for Awford’s side to make the breakthrough.

Hollands had already hit the post by the time he forced home Jack Whatmough’s header from a corner.

The outstanding Wallace broke clear for the second and lobbed the ball past Chris Lewington.

His shot was going just wide but Drennan snaffled it away.

Wallace then smashed a 25-yarder off the post and Drennan had a header cleared off the line.

Dagenham pulled one back after 34 minutes, completely against the run of play, as Carson saved superbly from Medy Olito – but Abu Ogogo tucked away the loose ball.

The home side then hit the post twice from a corner just before the break as they briefly came to life.

Normal service was resumed after the interval, with the 1,374 travelling away fans in magnificent voice throughout.

They were cheering a superb third goal on 56 minutes as Drennan rifled home a rasping left-footer from 25 yards.

Pompey had chances for a fourth, but the goal arrived with three minutes left as Rhys McCabe freed Wallace to roll the ball home.

That sealed a performance which has to rate right at the top of the Blues; displays this season.

And the win lifts Pompey to 16th in the table – but still five points from the relegation zone.
