Ricky Holmes savoured his key opener against Exeter and admitted: It was a fluke!

Holmes fired in a wind-assisted 30-yarder on the stroke of half-time in Saturday’s 3-2 win for the Blues.

The attacker explained he was aiming for Patrick Agyemang at the back post, but a gust of wind saw it sail over Grecians keeper Artur Krysiak and into the net.

Holmes was grateful for the stroke of luck which saw Pompey take a lead in at half-time that their dominance warranted.

He said: ‘It was a worldie!

‘No, seriously, it was a fluke. I was aiming for Pat but fortunately for us it went in.

‘The keeper was coming for a cross and no-one would have expected that to happen.

‘It came at a good time for us when we were on top of the game. Thankfully, it went in.

‘I said to Shaun Cooper I’d find him if I scored.

‘But I couldn’t go too mad because it was a fluke!

‘All my mates will see that I scored. I won’t tell them how!

‘I’ll just say it was from 30 yards!’

Holmes reserved praise for the role Exeter played in an entertaining game.

He said: ‘They are a good team and they showed that.

‘For us to be 3-0 up was good. Did we deserve that? I’m not too sure.

‘You had to feel for Exeter, really, because it was a good game of football. You don’t normally see passing like that in League Two.

‘They got back into the game, but we managed to just about get over the line.

‘They kept the ball well but never penetrated us.

‘They couldn’t break us down, but I feel they will get good results.

‘We are just proving to the league and ourselves we can get results and get up the league.’

The wind may have played a key role in Holmes’ goal, but it also provided tricky conditions to play in.

That was shown in Pompey’s set-pieces.

Holmes said: ‘The weather wasn’t the best and we had about 20 corners, too!

‘We had to go short because it was swirling everywhere.

‘One corner I hit too hard and then I hit it at the same place and it was going short.

‘It was tough conditions but that happens in football. I’m just pleased we got over the line.’
