Adams: Nugent still part of my plans

Tony Adams insists the capture of Jermaine Pennant does not spell the end of David Nugent's first-team run.

Nugent netted his maiden Premier League goal in the 1-1 draw at Spurs on Sunday, but could now find himself back on the bench for Saturday's FA Cup clash with Swansea City.

The former Preston striker has started the past four games for the club on the right-hand side of Adams' preferred 4-5-1 formation and has improved with every outing in an unfamiliar position.

But although Pennant is the more natural winger, Adams was full of praise for the hard-working Nugent, who has battled back into the first-team picture under the new manager.

Adams said: 'He's taken his opportunity with both hands and I hope there are more goals to come from him.

'He is playing as a third striker, rather than a right midfielder because that is not really his position.

'But he certainly goes back, tracks runners and works hard defensively for the team.

'He is doing a really good job for us.'

Having claimed a regular place in recent weeks, it would be harsh on Nugent if he is forced to surrender his place – particularly if that strike at White Hart Lane is the start of a rich goalscoring run.

Adams may also yet choose to revert to a 4-4-2 formation and partner Nugent alongside Peter Crouch at the expense of a midfielder.

But with Pennant, a fit-again John Utaka and Glen Little also vying for a place on the right flank, Adams now has options at his disposal.

He said: 'On the right, we've got John Utaka, Glen Little and David has been playing there.

'We've got players who can do good jobs.'
