Battling Pompey go down at United

Pompey's hopes of moving a step closer to Premier League safety were denied by a rampant Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The battling Blues went down to a 2-0 defeat at the Theatre of Dreams, with United edging closer to another league title thanks to goals from Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick.

Rooney opened the scoring for United after nine minutes, with the travelling Pompey fans fearing the worst for their side.

But while the Red Devils threatened to run away from proceedings, the goal feast failed to materialise, with keeper David James proving up for the challenge.

He denied United on countless occasions, while Pompey's defensive resilience also stood them in good stead.

At the other end, United No1 Edwin Van der Sar was having a relatively quiet night, with Pompey unable to breach the home rearguard.

Pompey had better luck in the second half, with the introduction of Jermaine Pennant, on for the injured David Nugent, giving the Blues an added dimension up front.

Glen Johnson and Peter Crouch both threatened to equalise as the United fans began to worry about their slender lead.

However, they need not have worried as substitute Michael Carrick sealed the points with a sublime right-foot shot past James on 82 minutes.
