Capello resigns as England manager

Fabio Capello

Fabio Capello

FABIO Capello has resigned as England manager with immediate effect, the FA has announced.

It comes as bookmakers today suspended bets on former Pompey boss Harry Redknapp taking the national hot seat.

In a statement, the FA said Mr Capello tendered his resignation at a meeting with chairman David Bernstein and general secretary Alex Horne at Wembley Stadium this afternoon.

The meeting was held over Mr Capello’s comments on Italian TV following the FA’s decision to strip John Terry of England captaincy.

Mr Bernstein said: ‘I would like to stress that during today’s meeting and throughout his time as England manager, Fabio has conducted himself in an extremely professional manner.

‘We have accepted Fabio’s resignation, agreeing this is the right decision. We would like to thank Fabio for his work with the England team and wish him every success in the future.’

It would be very interesting to see what Harry would do if given the England job. He made his name at Pompey where successive owners gave him lots of cash to bring in very good players. Prior to that without money he did not achieve much. Yes we did boast 4-5 current England internationals in our team at one time, but at most Premier League clubs (where the England manager would have to draw from) the bulk of the playing staff are overseas imports. The strength and sucess of the Prem is through these such players, the naturally skilled African, South American and Mediterranean Europeans. The home grown English players with any natural skill and consistancy are few and far between. Without a cheque book and instant naturalization Harry would struggle, as have all his predecessors, to muster a side capable of breaking the English duck of winning sweet 'FA' ,or even coming consistently close, since Sir Alf got lucky in '66.

@37 - You're right i didn't understand that - doesn't change anything i've said though. What is your opinion of the FA's conduct in this matter?

26 - "the British Justice System's 'innocent until proven guilty' law" --- This, which some people don't seem to understand, is a principle of procedural criminal law which applies in the courtroom in respect of any trial. It in no way prevents e.g. employers and the like from suspending an employee while such court action is pending. This is a very common and even normal action. In fact, as you will have noticed, it does not even prevent the court in many cases from holding an accused but "innocent until proven guilty" suspect in custody in prison.

Guys, you've got to stop kidding yourselves.FP belongs to a company owned by BC from Hong Kong end of. Players can be sold by AA if he thinks it's the only way, thats his job he's not a football manager or even a pompey fan. The taxman will now be smarting over the RednappManderic case and will be looking for a win.Ex prem club Pompey will be first casualty then look out the rest it will start collapsing like a pack of cards. The only way is a new owner but ask yourselves if you had hard earned millions would you by a championship club with a clapped out stadium , a rented training ground in scummer land and a medioca squad thats up for sale. The one bright spot is the manager and he'll be tempted away. Where are the local big money men who might have some loyalty and and Pompey pride,or is there non?

I wonder if Tottenham will not allow Harry to leave,or manage England alongside them for the season? Would Harry leave his beloved spuds, like he did with us? Which would possibly mean the FA look at Roy H again? He would leave WBA to manage England,im sure, which would leave the WBA managers job vacent.....And im sure Appleton would jump at the chance. WBA know him inside out,he knows them inside out. Maybe Capello leaving is not good news for us? Maybe it wont matter anyway! Who knows Its just a thought though.......

Thank goodness the corruption that our valiant FA accussed FIFA of doesn't exist in England eh? I must've missed the ruling where it became the job of the FA to decide who the England captain is (A bit like the ruling last year when the Premier league decided they had the right to fine Mr McCarthy for picking a side they didn't 'approve' of) - i must've also missed where it says they don't need to adhere to the British Justice System's 'innocent until proven guilty' law - punishing a man for crime he hasn't stood trial for yet. Well it convieniantly removes the problem of not being able to sack Mr Capello due to the large pay off required - publically undermine his authority as manager, force him into a corner and hey presto he resigns - problem solved. Oh yes and all this on the same day that the bookies favourite to replace him walks scott free over multiple charges of cheating the taxman spread across nearly a decade. Well Mr Mandaric certainly is a generous man isn't he? all those lovely 'gifts' to dear old 'Arry - i presume therefore that Mr Perrin received a similiar pressie when we beat dear old 'Arry's Southampton 4-1?.... or maybe not. So what of the taxman - embarressed again? One rule for football one rule for everyone else - can't go on forever - they'll have to be given something to appease their growing sense of injustice - what could that be? oh yes what about pesky old Portsmouth, there insistance on having crooks for owners that sail through the comprehensive fit and proper person tests is causing a bit of embaressment isn't it? Let's give the taxman them then, two birds one stone and all that. 114 years of proud history down the pan, but as long dear old 'Arry gets the England job eh.

Let's not forget where the problem's first started when Harry become our manager, he was good for us in the playing sense, but not in money management. The problem then goes to the owner SG you could not say No to him and then PS who should had been stronger and told the pair of them what the outcome would be. But no, he did not and now we have it with the three of them have gone. What a mess they left for somebody esle to sort out.
