Chopra strike chops down Pompey

Pompey’s woes continued tonight as Michael Chopra’s first-half goal sunk them against Ipswich.

The Tractor Boys’ 13th-minute strike did the damage at Fratton Park as the visitors collected a 1-0 win.

That meant the result echoed the Blues’ off-the-field problems after they applied to go into administration yesterday.

Both sides had plenty of chances to score in front of a crowd of 14,330.

Pompey will look to ref Darren Deadman for not giving a second-half goal, as he decided Greg Halford’s long throw went in without getting a touch from one of the cluster of bodies in front of Ipswich keeper Arran Lee-Barrett.

Marko Futacs had a chance after 25 minutes which was deflected over, and Dave Kitson skewed a shot wide when well placed after 65 minutes.

But the visitors had opportunities to kill the game off, too, with the lively Lee Martin hitting the post and firing over from a few yards.

The Pompey fans showed their fighting spirit with chants of ‘we’re not gonna die’ ringing around the stadium long after the final whistle.

Perhaps someone could enlighten me & explain how you so called fans abusing each other is furthering your cause? Anyone who speaks the truth is immediately attacked & shouted down. So many people in denial - PFC,s problems are entirely self inflicted & those "running " the club have learned nothing from previous mistakes. I do not think any of the creditors are going to show much sympathy.

Shocking performance by us i thought, can clearly see many players are carrying knocks or injuries of some sort. Passing was dreadful, shooting worse. Still refuse to chase the second ball. But having said that, we still gave them a good game, Kitson actually made a difference second half. Performance aside, it never helps when the league continue to send clown referees down, goal should have stood, linesman should be man enough to tel the ref, he didn't have any objection to the goal. I sit right behind that goal, row B, and it 100% came off an Ipswich defender. Amazing support, although thought a few more may have turned up, good show of solidarity at the end, didn't get back to Andover until gone midnight.

Laidlaw makes a good point. The average fan is struggling to meet the costs of a footie game. £26 is a tank of petrol or almost a weeks worth of food shopping. It comes down to too much money for player wages, not enough going into the pricing structure for fans. I remember buying a ticket for Fulham v Pompey with rail included for £5 in the 80s. £5 would buy me a beer in london now. It.doesnt mean we dont love our club any less because we cant afford it. Im glued to the radion or the BBC site every time Pompey play and check this site a dozen times a day for some scrap of good news.So please dont suggest the many like me arent true Pompey fans.

Mid week matches have historically suffered from lower gates. A lot of people who regularly go at the weekends work away during the week and are unable to attend mid week matches. The support is there and always will be, we musn't lose heart. PUP

Time to face the facts, tonight when it really counted only 14,330 fans turned up and that was with the 4 for $44. Based on these figures its obvious we are no longer the best supported team in the south. Southampton averaged 22,161 last season and that was in L1, making them the 7th best supported team in the FL. Its clear when the going gets tough, most cant be bothered, too many glory hunters.

As I have said before 200,000 turned out to watch us parade the Cup. PFC is a part of the cities fabric. We need a fresh outlook to cultivate support for the club. All I hear is plan B where is plan A were just sitting back waiting for stuff to happen. Were sadly not gallivanting our single most important weapon against all these stacked odds and thats the fans! Im not just talking about us on the forums. No leadership just waiting to see what happens. Thats plan B. Play up Pompey

Too many fans over the last four decades have had their fingers burned for various reasons .. For example I know blokes who were kicked out of their director box seats for AC Milan dignatory's, and have not been back since .. A new vision, a new group, without the tarnished past, and with the fan's having a huge say will bring many of the good old supporter's back .. for every ten Pompey fan's I know, only about two or three go to games anymore, the rest have too many bad experiences from the past .. a new transparent vision would re ignite our sleeping giant fanbase .. I am convinced of it ..

Have faith Pompey will never die. We need someone with vision and leadership. We will be here until the summer we won't be allowed to liquidate half way through a season. Some of the bigger wage contracts expire. Administration will lower the asking price. Forget plan B were here to stay 114 years of history won't end now. We need a fresh out look theres always another way PUP

Laidlaw is a Legend

33000 Boro in the cup at home 1980, we also had a goal that seemed fair disallowed that night as well. Times have changed in supporting football, most of us have until recently, only ever seen the club struggle with the odd occaision of excitement. So the recent foray of PL and cup finals has suddenly brought a new breed that will only turn up when success is in the air. Plus football was more affordable, travel away was affordable, didn't BR do a £1 weekend return. It was only the mid 90s when a quid bet on macca would return me my ticket money programme and a couple of beers and he was only around 14s. Theses days even keeping it tight I do £70 odd all in. That's why I have to pick and choose games. Does that make me a lesser fan, well if your del1975,then yes, but to everyone else no. Maybe I'll gain a few brownie points by saying that i never missed a full members or anglo italian game. The important thing is to support our club the best way we can , whether the odd game or through the club shop. It does not mean your support for the club is any less than the next.
