Cotterill ready to bolster squad

Steve Cotterill is confident his recruitment drive will accelerate next week.

The Pompey boss admitted his frustration at having to throw a team together for next weekend's Championship opener at Coventry.

Cotterill has been hamstrung by a transfer embargo in pre-season, although he can now bring some additions after being given special dispensation by the Football League.

He was given clearance to land three players, with Ibrahima Sonko one of those after arriving on loan from Stoke this week.

Jamie Ashdown and Stephen Jordan are expected to be the other two names Cotterill will bring in.

There are still gaping holes in Pompey's squad, however, as was

highlighted on their pre-season tour of North America.

The dispensation has been allowed to give Cotterill a squad of 20, with the hope more can arrive if youngsters are sent out on loan.

Whatever happens, they are going to have a team with a lack of playing time together next weekend.

The toing and froing is likely to continue, with the transfer deadline at the end of the month.

Cotterill said: 'I've got my fingers in a few pies. There are a couple

I'm waiting on.

'Hopefully leading up to the start of the season we can get a few over the line.

'It's not ideal. I would have loved to have my squad together and loved to have them now. It's amazing what three, four or five bodies would do for us.

'But they will have to be the right ones. The trouble is, all the free transfers are gone. All the decent ones have gone.'
