Door's open for Sol to stay

Pompey have left the door open for Sol Campbell to remain at Fratton Park.

The skipper is out of contract after his previous two-year deal expired yesterday.

It means he is free to walk away and join another club should he wish.

Alternatively, he can opt to continue negotiating with the Blues, talks which originally began early last month.

Regardless of the uncertainty, Peter Storrie has insisted this may not yet be the end of Campbell's Pompey career.

Both parties have already discussed a fresh deal centred on appearance-based rewards rather than a basic set amount.

They were put on hold due to the holiday period.

But with Storrie back at Fratton Park next week, Pompey's executive chairman has indicated there still may be chance.

He said: 'There are not any discussions going on with Sol at the moment.

'In terms of whether there will be future discussions, we will look at it next week.

'But at the moment "no".'

Campbell has made 111 appearances and scored two goals since joining the Blues in the summer of 2006.

He memorably led them to the FA Cup in 2008 to cap their greatest season for more than half a century.

Aged 35 in September, the former Arsenal man rediscovered his form in the second half of last season under Paul Hart to suggest he can still play in the Premier League.

Yet Pompey are loath to offer him a repeat of his last contract which fixed wages believed to be around 100,000 a week.
