Grand vision of Pompey's future

These are the pictures that every Pompey fan has been waiting for – the club's new stadium at Horsea Island in all its glory.

The images of the proposed 36,000-seater ground are the first to be seen since plans for the Pompey's new home were announced in October last year.

And these pictures will give high hopes to fans who were left disappointed when Pompey's previous plan – for an eye-catching waterfront stadium at The Hard, Portsmouth – were ruled out.

The plan for Horsea Island may not be quite as eye-catching as Pompey's previous dream – but this is one that has a far greater chance of coming true.

And its splendour is a far cry from the drab surroundings of Fratton Park.

Most stunning is the image showing the sight that will greet drivers on the M275 – as pictured on the front page – as they enter the gateway to the city and see the stadium bathed in beams of light which reflect off the water.

Another artist's impression offers a mouth-watering glimpse of what a packed house at the new stadium will look like.

The designs were drawn up by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, who bring a wealth of experience to designing sports stadiums across the world.

The company's most famous creations include the Beijing National Stadium, whose criss-cross design appears to be echoed in these images of Pompey's new stadium.

New homes at the site will go a long way towards funding the development, and the images include an artist's impression of these waterfront homes.

And an aerial view of where the new stadium will be located shows how close it is to the waterfront and to the surrounding roads network.
