Family values still strong for Misfits
Family values are strong for Misfits as they have bounced back from troubled times.
Back in their groove, they are celebrating a superb third place in Portsmouth League division one.
And the revival has been led by long-standing captain Barbara Greetham, who originally took the reins from her mother Jackie.
After 40 years making the headlines in the local leagues, Misfits had to forfeit the final skirmishes in the 2009 Portsmouth League season.
With the side's future under threat they were relegated from the top flight.
But after romping to the division two crown during the winter, Greetham's side sparkled in the summer sun.
Vice-captain Sam Todd and Joanna Toms, who takes on a great deal of the umpiring, are working tirelessly to keep the prestigious old club alive.
The Misfits' rich tradition started back in 1969.
They played friendlies prior to becoming founder members of the Petersfield League in 1970.
Soon they moved into the Chichester League and began playing on Sundays.
After winning the Petersfield League in 1977, 1987, 1988 and 1990 – when the league finished – Misfits had not lost their hunger.
Five years later their ambition saw them join the Portsmouth League where, thanks to the dedication of Greetham junior & Co, they are still playing now.
Misfits have worked their way up through the divisions, with the red in their kit synonymous with their success.
Having started out wearing red and green, the class of '10 currently don black and red.
The skipper said: 'We don't have a sponsor so we bought our own kit last season.
'And we don't train as cur-rent team members come from Petersfield, Chichester, Worthing and Portsmouth which makes it too difficult.
'It always takes us a little while to warm up at the beginning of a season but we enjoy our netball and are always on the look-out for new players to join our squad.'
Over the years Helen and Barbara Richardson, Anne and Chic Spears, Jenny Wise-man, Anne Sullivan, Janette Jays, Judy Hayes, Mary Fis-her, Chris Grover, Bev Daffin, Sally Gillam and Sue Pettifer have represented the team.
