Highlights: Havant and Waterlooville 1 - Pompey 2
A new Fratton era under Steve Cotterill began with a win as Pompey defeated the Hawks 2-1 at West Leigh Park.
Goals from David Nugent (14 minutes) and Michael Brown (55) either side of Mustafa Tiryaki's strike on the stroke of half-time were enough to secure victory in the sunshine at West Leigh Park.
Pompey started brightly, with Matt Ritchie in particular impressing.
The diminutive frontman found room in the box on two occasions early on, but each time saw his goal-bound efforts deflected wide.
Nugent, making his first Pompey appearance since returning from a loan spell at Burnley last season, also had a good opportunity to break the deadlock but he was fouled when the break was on.
The striker made amends moments later when he fired past keeper Nathan Ashmore with 14 minutes on the clock.
Marlon Pack's header out of the centre of defence evaded the Hawks defence, Nugent seized on the opportunity and tucked the ball past Ashmore with the coolest of finishes.
Tommy Smith saw his header cleared off the line four minutes later as Pompey looked to add a second, but Bobby Hopkinson read the effort and headed the ball over the bar.
Pompey continued to threaten through Nugent, who missed a golden opportunity from six-yards out, but it was the Hawks who were next to find the back of the net.
A long free-kick from Ian Selley found Tiryaki and the giant forward made no mistake in diverting the ball past the on-rushing John Stewart.
Pompey had the chance to regain the lead minutes before the half-time break but right-back Joel Ward fired over with a pile-drive effort.
At the start of the second half, Pompey brought on young keeper Liam O'Brien for Stewart and what a decision it was.
Three minutes after the restart, the keeper faced a penalty from Sam Pearce after Marlon Pack brought down substitute Stuart Douglas.
But he stood up to the challenge and dived to his right to deny the defender from 12 yards.
Pompey then retook the lead through Michael Brown as he scored from the tightest of angles.
From then on the game lost impetus as a host of Blues substitutes were made.
Chances were few and far between as Pompey made a winning start to their pre-season programme.
