Hreidarsson pledges to stay at Pompey

Hermann Hreidarsson will snub Middlesbrough to remain at Fratton Park.

The veteran full-back has pledged to pen a fresh 12-month deal to keep him at the Blues for a third season.

Celtic and Rangers also showed interest in the Icelandic international who has become a cult figure at Pompey.

But Hreidarsson has decided to stay on the south coast.

He said: 'Me signing with Portsmouth again was always going to happen even though I had many other options.

'Me and my family feel great in this place, we have been there for two fun years and I think I have plenty more in me to play in the Premier League and that had a lot to say in this decision.

'Middlesbrough showed me most interest and also Celtic and Rangers, but that did not go as far.

'Portsmouth promised me, as far as they could, that they want to strengthen the team for next season and that their goal is to keep doing well in the Premier League.'

The news is a timely boost for Pompey fans following the departure of Glen Johnson.

Sean Davis is also set to leave when his contract expires while skipper Sol Campbell's future is uncertain.

Hreidarsson – who will be 35 next month – stormed back into the first-team during the second half of last season to prove he still has a massive part to play in the club's future.

His whole-hearted and determined displays have established him as a firm fans' favourite since his arrival in the summer of 2007.
