It's no flight of fancy for fans who travel so far for the team

SOME fans abroad just couldn't face watching the final so far away – so they came back.

Among them was 14-year-old Joe Birmingham, who scraped together all his savings to travel 8,000 miles from the Falklands.

He got to Portsmouth on Friday after flying for 19 hours. With help from his father John and family in Portsmouth and Clanfield, the youngster got together the 1,350 for the flight.

'For a while I didn't know whether it was going to happen,' Joe said, 'but when I found out I had definitely got a Wembley ticket and my flight was booked I was so pleased.'

Also home was Andrew Hayward, who had already travelled 10,000 miles to see his team win.

Andrew, 26, of Telephone Road, Fratton, said: 'I've been back-packing in Australia for six months and I've got another six months left on my visa but I flew back just for the final.

'It's cost me just over 1,000 but it's well worth it because I love Pompey.'

Another Pompey fan, Bill Harris, from Brisbane, flew in from Queensland, Australia, to watch the match – and then jumped on a helicopter to Wembley stadium.
