Jacob slams 'years of excess' at Pompey
Mark Jacob hit out at 'years of excess' following his Pompey axing.
The former executive director headed around 85 Fratton Park redundancies this week as Andrew Andronikou slashed staff.
Jacob was told of his departure at a morning London meeting before Andronikou headed off to the south coast to deliver more bad news.
For the 43-year-old - whose birthday was also Wednesday - it ended a Blues involvement which began back in October.
Initially, brought in my Ali Al Faraj, he worked underneath Daniel Azougy.
Yesterday he was the final link from that controversial regime to depart Fratton Park.
And Jacob has urged the club to learn from its mistakes and create a better Pompey.
He said: 'I am disappointed as I felt I had a continuing role to play.
'But clearly various changes of ownership and cuts meant my position was very very awkward.
'I am a dedicated football fan who felt I had a role to play at the club in bringing in an element of gravitas and putting the club back into the community.
'Unfortunately, many of my suggestions were not carried out by either of the owners or fellow directors.
'Quite clearly the profile of the club is such that it needs to be built from the community upwards and not from the top downwards. That is something which has to change.
'The club is in this financial crisis owing to years of excess. It is not something that has happened overnight.
'I am most disappointed for the staff who have been made redundant, some of them have been there for a considerable period of time.
'There are so many people out there that care deeply for their club and for years have been let down.'
Meanwhile, Jacob has stressed he was never paid for his executive director role.
He added: 'To be honest, I can completely understand why the administrator has taken this action.
'He said he couldn't find a role for me within the club and I respect that.
'However, I have never been paid.
'How could I justify collecting a salary from a company that was clearly not turning in profits?'
