James: Surgery comes at perfect time

David James believes the timing is perfect to undergo surgery on his problematic shoulder.

With Pompey's Premier League safety secured, the keeper has opted to seek help for his painful left shoulder.

That meant Asmir Begovic being thrown in for his Blues debut against Sunderland – a match the hosts won 3-1.

In the meantime, James has now undergone surgery and is expected to be out of action for the next three months.

That will coincide largely with the close season, although the 38-year-old will also miss 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra next month.

However, he is expected to be back in action in time for the Premier League kick-off on August 15.

And James insists it is something which had to be done sooner rather than later.

He said: 'It's something I've had for about 18 months, but I've been able to play with it.

'I'll miss a couple of World Cup matches, but it's a good time to have the operation.

'I always trust that England can do well – even without me!'

James actually sat out the Sunderland victory with an unrelated neck injury. Now Begovic is in line to retain his place for the final match of the season at Wigan on Sunday.
