Kanu: Late goal no consolation

Kanu insisted his first goal for more than three months could not gloss over a desperately disappointing Birmingham display.

Pompey slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Fratton Park last night as they failed to match the highs of the previous encounter three days earlier.

Their consolation was netted in injury time by Kanu, who entered the fray as a 65th-minute substitute for Michael Brown.

The veteran striker headed home the impressive Jamie O'Hara's right-wing cross – but it was too late to inspire Avram Grant's men to an unlikely, and undeserved, point.

It was Kanu's first goal since netting against Aston Villa in the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup back at the start of December.

His tally for the Blues is now 24 in 116 appearances since arriving in the summer of 2006, the most famous of which being the 2008 FA Cup final winner.

Despite getting on the scoresheet last night, however, he could not hide his frustration at Pompey's failure.

He said: 'We played some good football at times in the first half, but didn't play well overall and that is disappointing.

'Perhaps we were a little bit tired, I am not so sure.

'But we have to keep on playing, especially in the position we are in. There is no excuse for what happened last night, we just didn't play well.

'I enjoyed my goal and I will always try to keep on scoring, especially when it's been such a long time.

'Hopefully, I can keep doing it for Wembley and get back in the team for that.

'But the most important thing at the moment is the league, so everybody was disappointed.'
