Lampitt: We must work with limited squad size
David Lampitt defended Pompey's lack of numbers in their squad and insisted: We want quality over quantity.
While many were expecting a raft of new additions on deadline day earlier this week, Pompey ended the day one man down in terms of sheer numbers after losing Marc Wilson, Tommy Smith and Marlon Park, while recruiting Dave Kitson and Liam Lawrence.
Lampitt admits it is a tough balance to strike to be able to give boss Steve Cotterill enough players to use within the tight budget constraints.
He said: 'In terms of the numbers, Steve and I talked at a very early stage about the kind of numbers we wanted to have.
'Irrespective of the embargo, we wanted to keep it as a tight squad because of our financial constraints.
'Steve would rather keep a smaller number of higher-quality players than spreading the cost base across a larger number of players who he would not consider as good enough for the first team.
'Strategically, that's what we have tried to do.'
Pompey now have just 18 recognised first-team players – two of who are long-term injuries in Danny Webber and Tom Kilbey – but are working on boosting those numbers with Kanu, Ricardo Rocha and Hermann Hreidarsson lined up if the Football League grant them dispensation.
Lampitt said: 'We haven't finished because there are still a couple of positions that we want to strengthen in.
'That process is ongoing and has developed. It will continue to develop. I don't want to give people false hope but things are ongoing.
'We still have the chance to strengthen from loan signings and free agents.'
