Lauren and Nugent in Euro axe

David Nugent and Lauren have suffered Euro heartbreak after not being included in Pompey's UEFA Cup squad.

Ben Sahar and Jerome Thomas are other notable absentees from the Blues' list of 23 players submitted to UEFA.

The squad cannot now be changed until February 1, 2009, when the next transfer window has closed.

It means the quartet will not be eligible for the first round which kicks off tomorrow against Vitoria Guimaraes.

Should Pompey qualify, they will also be unable to feature in the group stages, which consist of four matches.

The quartet are joined by Djimi Traore and Richard Duffy in failing to make the European cut.

However, the injured Niko Kranjcar is included. He is expected to return at the end of October, in time to possibly feature in the group stages.

Meanwhile, Linvoy Primus and Martin Cranie have not been considered because of their loan spells at Charlton until the end of the year.

The axing of Nugent, Lauren, Sahar and Thomas has been largely brought about by UEFA selection policy.

According to their rules, a squad may contain up to 25 players, although a maximum of eight have to fulfil a certain criteria.

Up to four spaces are reserved only for association-trained players who between the ages of 15 to 21 have been registered in one country.

That applies to Jamie Ashdown, Sol Campbell, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe.

A maximum of four other slots are then put aside for club-trained players who have been with one team between the ages of 15 and 21.

In Pompey's case there are just two – Marc Wilson and Matt Ritchie – ensuring the squad tallies 23.

And it means there is no room for Nugent, Lauren, Sahar or Thomas.
