Linvoy boost in bid for testimonial

The Football Association have given the green light for Linvoy Primus to have his Pompey testimonial – this year.

It was believed the Blues legend would have to serve 10 years at the club to qualify for the honour.

However, football's governing body have stepped in to set the record straight.

They insist there is no legislation in place to dictate when a testimonial should be awarded.

It's a claim backed up by the Premier League, who also stress they have no jurisdiction in such matters.

Instead, it is entirely down to the club's discretion – which is good news for Primus.

Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie had already indicated the 35-year-old would be rewarded with a testimonial when he reached his 10th year at the club in the summer of 2010.

He thought the 10-year service rule was required for a testimonial to be offered and, as a result, was keen to offer Primus a one-year deal.

However, the FA ruling means that gesture could now be focused on keeping the cult figure in an ambassadorial role from next season.

Now it remains to be seen just when Primus' richly-earned testimonial will take place, an event surely set to be well attended by the fans.

An FA spokesman said: 'We can confirm there are no rules on this issue.

'It is entirely up to the club's discretion.'

Primus brought the house down on Monday night when he climbed off the bench against Sunderland for his first appearance in two years.

It took his Blues tally to 219 appearances since arriving as a free agent from Reading in the summer of 2000.

He comfortably remains the club's longest-serving player.
