Linvoy still has so much to offer
Pompey supporters today hailed the decision to keep people's champion Linvoy Primus at Fratton Park.
Primus yesterday agreed a one-year deal to take him into his 10th season with Blues.
The 35-year-old has been handed a far-reaching remit which will encompass playing, ambassadorial, mentoring and advisory roles.
It was an agreement first revealed by The News two weeks ago.
The move has been met with universal approval by supporters, who heaped praise on the club for the decision.
Pompey Supporters' Club central branch chairman, Nigel Tresidder, lauded the news.
He insists Primus should be handed a job for life after the unstinting loyalty he has shown.
Tresidder said: 'Linvoy is a great ambassador for the club.
'He's an unbelievable person, a great guy. He should be accommodated in any role he chooses.
'We are all delighted to hear that he is going to be staying.
'Children look up to Linvoy, and he has so much to offer.
'He can teach so much to others, and they can learn a lot about loyalty from him and the truthful way he conducts himself.
'I would like to see him have a job for life.
'He has been through a lot, had injuries and not always played – but he has always stuck with us.
'Despite having some difficult times he has never once criticised the club.
'He can help a lot in an ambassadorial role and with visiting people. That will be beneficial.
'We have a lot of building to do and Linvoy has to be a central part of that.
'He deserves everything he gets. I'm delighted for him.'
Primus is now easily the longest-serving player at Pompey after arriving from Reading in 2000.
Portsmouth Independent Supporters' Association spokesman Barry Dewing believes the fact he has been through some much with the Blues makes him ideal for his unique role.
Dewing also hopes the move can help the club build better links with the community in the future.
He said: 'Linvoy is respected by everyone at Pompey.
'It's great to hear he is staying on, and hopefully he can pass on his experience to the younger players and help them move in the right direction.
'He can show them what hard work can do.
'He has always done the business – on and off the pitch.
'It's nice for the fans that he has been at the club for so long. They can relate to him. He's seen the good and the bad times.
'It seems Linvoy will settle in the area, too, and that means a lot.
'It's important to have proper links with the city, and he can help that.
'Hopefully Linvoy can help the club build for the future.'
