Lualua: I won’t flip for Pompey

Lomana Lualua celebrates scoring for Blackpool with his trademark somersault

Lomana Lualua celebrates scoring for Blackpool with his trademark somersault

Lomana Lualua has assured Pompey: You won’t be seeing the somersault.

The Blackpool striker – who was linked with a return to the Blues in the summer – faces his former club for the first time since he left in August 2007 in today’s Championship clash at Bloomfield Road (5.20pm).

The former Newcastle man gained legendary status at Fratton Park – most notably for his match-winning performance in the 4-1 win over bitter-rivals Southampton back in 2005.

But he has revealed his heartache at his beloved former club’s current plight and vowed he will not perform his trademark acrobatic celebration if he scores.

Lualua said: ‘It will be very emotional for me playing against Portsmouth and I will not celebrate if I score – I could not do that to the club I love.

‘I had a fantastic time there playing under Harry Redknapp and still see them as my team, so trying to beat them will be a strange feeling.

‘I will have mixed emotions but sometimes you have got to do what you have to do and we want the three points to help us win promotion to the Premier League.

‘What is happening at Fratton Park is very upsetting and it breaks my heart to see the club suffering.

‘The worst thing about the situation is that ordinary members of staff will not have thousands of pounds to fall back on like most of the players.

‘I really hope they can sort themselves out and get back to where they were before.

‘The fans are so passionate and deserve a club to be proud of.’

Blackpool officials last night insisted that this evening’s match was not under threat of being postponed despite the recent cold weather.

Harry used to hate that flip. I think it put him out of action for 4 games once.
