McAllister reveals Fratton talks

Gary McAllister was today set to join Pompey after confirming he was holding talks to become the club's new assistant manager.

The former Scotland skipper has been approached by boss Paul Hart and confirmed to The News he was due to head to the south coast for talks.

McAllister said: 'I'm coming down for a chat but I can't say anything more than that at the moment.

'Things might become a bit clearer soon but I am going to have to leave it at that for now.'

Hart had been unable to appoint a new assistant manager after Brian Kidd's departure in the summer and is looking to bolster his coaching ranks as Pompey attempt to arrest their poor start to the season.

It is believed McAllister's role would be as the Blues' number two, with his day-to-day duties heavily involved in coaching.

McAllister has been out of the game since he was sacked as Leeds manager in December 2008 and recently declined the chance to join the Scotland set-up, preferring to wait for a full-time role at club level.

The former midfielder represented Motherwell, Leicester, Leeds, Coventry and Liverpool and won 57 caps for Scotland in his playing days.
