Next three will decide Pompey's destiny

Richard Hughes told Pompey: Our Premier League fate still has to be decided.

The Blues midfielder does not think Saturday's 5-0 thrashing at Manchester United will have an impact on the club's fight for survival.

Hughes reckons it will be the clashes his side have on the horizon during the rest of this month which will be critical to their campaign.

Pompey were outclassed by Sir Alex Ferguson's United at Old Trafford.

But they have a quick opportunity to get that game out of their system as they take on Sunderland tomorrow.

That match marks the start of three league games against sides towards the foot of the table.

Sunderland arrive before Pompey take on Stoke at home and Burnley away.

Hughes insists there is still hope for the Blues to bridge a seven-point gap to Premier League safety.

They are going to have to deliver a healthy return from those critical clashes, however.

Hughes said: 'There is hope. It would be ridiculous to say otherwise.

'The fixtures are there for us to turn things around.

'We knew we had some tough fixtures.

'We would have looked at the United game and thought "anything we get out of this is a bonus".

'The gap is there and it has to be bridged.

'But some tough matches are out of the way now.

'We have some games coming up which we would look at as more winnable.

'They are matches we can win and put ourselves back in the running.'
