No keeper crisis at Pompey

Tony Adams played down talk of a Pompey goalkeeping crisis and insisted: David James is fine.

The Blues manager has taken steps to slam concerns James is facing a period out of action ahead of tomorrow's FA Cup fourth-round clash with Swansea.

Those fears emerged after Harry Redknapp said the England international is carrying a knee injury.

Redknapp revealed he had been told by the 38-year-old he was being hampered by the problem and believed he would be sidelined.

But Adams promised James does not need an operation after having an injection last week.

An injury to Pompey's talismanic number one would leave his side without a recognised senior keeper going into a critical period of the season.

Jamie Ashdown is out long-term after tearing ankle ligaments in training. That would leave only untried youngster Asmir Begovic and rookie Jon Stewart, who arrived from Weymouth in the summer, as Adams' options.

He has again been linked with a move for French keeper Yohann Pele, with the player's agent confirming his interest.

But the Pompey boss was confident James would be able to continue to provide his crucial presence.

James travelled to London last week to have the injection in his knee which enabled him to play against Spurs.

Adams promised that would keep him off the operating table.

He said: 'I've had the same injection in my knee and I'm looking super-fit on the touchline.

'He will be absolutely fine – not a problem. If I get 10 in front of him working their socks off, then he can just stand between the sticks.

'He's had the same knee for the past 38 years and he has done perfectly well with it.

'I certainly don't think it will keep him out tomorrow.

'I don't think he will need another injection and he doesn't need an operation. It has made it a little bit more comfortable.

'I have 100 per cent got no worries whatsoever.

'He is as fit as any other player at the club.'
