Pressure will bring out best in Pompey

Hassan Yebda believes pressure will bring the best out of Pompey as their bid for survival reaches fever pitch.

The heat will be turned up on Avram Grant's side tonight when Sunderland arrive at Fratton Park for a match which is of critical significance for the Blues.

Pompey find themselves seven points from the safety mark going into the game, which marks the start of a run that will decide whether the Blues are going to make a fist of their fight to stay up.

Yebda acknowledged the significance of the match and knows tension is mounting, with his side desperately needing the three points.

The Algerian reckons that will help his side rise to the occasion, though.

'We have to do everything to beat Sunderland,' he said.

'We have to know that and then go on the pitch with a good mentality to get a win.

'There will be pressure, but I think the pressure could be good for us.

'It's very difficult for us now. But we have to demonstrate our qualities on the pitch and show what we can do.'

Yebda was given a 15-minute runout at Manchester United on Saturday as Pompey were crushed 5-0.

The 25-year-old is set to return to the starting line-up against the Black Cats tonight.

Yebda thinks the weekend thumping will have little impact against Steve Bruce's side.

He said: 'We were disappointed, but we know that we have to work hard and see what we can do against Sunderland.

'We have to do everything to put in a good performance now.

'We have to work hard to get a good result and then we will see what will happen from there.'
