Sahar to leave in January

Ben Sahar has been told he can leave Fratton Park in January.

The Blues have decided not to renew the teenage striker's six-month long loan and he will return to Chelsea.

The Israeli international arrived during the summer and registered four goals during pre-season.

Yet, since then he has failed to appear in a single competitive match for Pompey and has not featured in a squad for the past 14 matches.

Sahar last week spoke publicly of his frustration at his lack of action, with Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Kanu and David Nugent all ahead of him.

And despite having the option of extending the loan, both parties have decided a parting of the ways is best.

Executive chairman Peter Storrie said: 'Ben will go back in January, it has been a mutual decision.

'He's not been involved and we feel sorry for the boy but the coaches feel he's not at that level, that he will be better in the Championship.

'I can understand why the boy thinks he should be in the Premier League, after all he plays internationally.

'He's had injuries and knocks but quite frankly needs to play and to go somewhere for that to happen – and I think at the moment that would be in the Championship.

'He may go to another Premier League side, that is up to Chelsea, but he will go back to them at the beginning of January.'

Sahar arrived at Fratton Park following loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and QPR last season, where he totalled just three goals.

He started the season on the substitutes' bench against Manchester United and Everton before badly gashing his knee while on international duty.

Now fully fit, his most recent reserve outing saw him net one and create another in last month's 2-0 win over Aston Villa at West Leigh Park.

However, Sahar's departure will allow the Blues the opportunity to bring in another domestic loan signing during the January transfer window.

Two are permitted, with Armand Traore already at Fratton Park until the end of the season from Arsenal.
