Sunderland to test Pompey's Crouch resolve

Sunderland are set to test Pompey's resolve with a £14m bid for Peter Crouch.

Sources in the north east believe Steve Bruce is keen to take the Blues' top goalscorer to the Stadium of Light.

And the move could accelerate this week with both Bruce and Pompey executive chairman Peter Storrie back from holiday.

Storrie will want to do everything possible to keep Crouch at the club, with Sulaiman Al Fahim's proposed 60m takeover set to be completed this week.

The 6ft 7in hitman has made it clear he is frustrated at the lack of progress Pompey made last season following his 9m move from Liverpool.

Crouch indicated he felt he had been let down, with the Blues failing to deliver on promises made to him.

Pompey will be hopeful the prospect of Al Fahim injecting millions into the club will be enough to see Crouch remain.

Bruce is a big fan of the England international and had been keen to make a move for him previously at Wigan.

But the Black Cats boss is now armed with a significant transfer war chest following the takeover by Texan Ellis Short.

AC Milan have also been linked with a move for Crouch, but a representative for the player has played down that talk. Blackburn and Fulham are also keen on him.
