Sylvain Distin
Athletic centre-back who joined Pompey on a free transfer from Manchester City in the summer of 2007 and has become a firm fans' favourite at Fratton Park.
Distin settled into his new surroundings remarkably quickly and forged a formidable central-defensive pairing with Sol Campbell, hailed as one of the best partnerships in the Premier League by manager Harry Redknapp.
As well as being an imposing defender on the floor and in the air, the Frenchman has also shown a desire to bomb forward from defence at every opportunity.
His team-mates certainly appreciate what he does for the team, voting him as the player's player of the year last season.
He is already widely recognised as one of Redknapp's shrewdest signings for the club.
