Utaka 'wants to leave' Pompey

French title chasers Bordeaux revealed they have been offered John Utaka.

The Ligue 1 outfit stated they have been given the opportunity to sign Pompey's Nigerian international.

Bordeaux chairman Jean-Louis Triaud said his club have been contacted about the possibility of landing the player the Blues signed for 7m two years ago.

Pompey have to cut their wage bill in the summer to ease debts.

Triaud insisted Utaka wants to return to France, and they are now weighing up a move for the player.

He said: 'We have been offered John Utaka.

'I told coach Laurent Blanc, he is the one who makes the decision.

'I have been surprised by his age because he is only 27.

'I passed the information on, but it is up to the coach to make his decision.

'No decision has been made yet. I know Utaka wants to come back to France.'

Utaka has been through a tumultuous spell in England since arriving from Rennes.

He made a promising start to his time at the club after being brought in by Harry Redknapp.

Utaka bagged two goals in his first three games, including a wonderful solo effort against Bolton.

But he failed to build on the momentum he gathered, scoring three goals across the rest of the 2007-08 campaign.

One of those came in the 4-1 demolition of Newcastle – Pompey's first win at St James' Park in 58 years.

He ended last season in style, providing the delivery for Kanu's goal in the FA Cup final victory over Cardiff.

However, Utaka has failed to score in 18 appearances this season and has come in for criticism from some fans.

He has two years remaining on his current agreement.
