Wilson relishing battle with Liverpool ace

Marc Wilson geared up for his midfield showdown with Steven Gerrard and admitted: I can't wait to get stuck in.

Wilson is set to be tasked with taking on the England star in Pompey's clash with Liverpool on Monday.

The 22-year-old has impressed since reverting to the midfield role he started his career playing in before being converted to a defender.

Now, Wilson will be given one of the toughest missions of his career as he has to nullify arguably the most dynamic player in world football.

But the Republic of Ireland hopeful is relishing the task of taking on the Liverpool captain at Anfield.

Wilson said: 'I'm looking forward to it. Obviously, Steven Gerrard is a world-class player and you want to play against the best.

'He's a different class – year after year he scores great goals. He's strong, quick, a great passer of the ball, great vision, a great example to young players out there.

'I think he's a great leader who leads by example. Every game he puts 100 per cent in.'

Wilson insists there is every chance of Pompey getting a result against Liverpool despite the club's ongoing problems on and off the pitch.

He believes his side can make Rafa Benitez's men wilt under the weight of expectation placed on them.

Pompey travel to Anfield for the televised clash with all the pressure on their opponents.

Liverpool have lost their past two games and find themselves outside of the Champions League places with nine matches to go.

Only a win will do for them against Pompey, but Wilson believes his team are capable of causing an upset.

Wilson warned Liverpool are as powerful as any Premier League outfit on their day – but Pompey have what it takes to cause a shock, especially after the Blues beat them 2-0 back in December.

He said: 'I don't think the lads mind where they go at the minute.

'I think Liverpool are having a bit of a hard time.

'I watched them play against Wigan and I don't think they are playing the best football – but on their day they are as good as anyone.

'Maybe they are thinking "It's Portsmouth, they are bottom of the league so it's going to be an easy win". Maybe we can get on them.

'I think the longer the game goes on the harder it will be for them. They are definitely beatable, I have seen Portsmouth beat them in the past as well.

'I never played that day (December's 2-0 win) but I was on the bench watching the lads. Hopefully we can replicate it.

'What is most important is we've got to go there and put pressure on them from the word go. We've got to be on top of our game, give 100 per cent and go from there.'
