Whittingham laments Pompey defending

Guy Whittingham was left exasperated by the defensive mishaps which led to Pompey’s downfall against Hartlepool.

The Blues are now winless in 15 games after falling to a 3-1 loss to the bottom-of-the-table side at Fratton Park.

Defensive gaffes were the undoing of Whittingham’s men as their encouraging football was undone by basic errors.

Jack Baldwin was unmarked for the first goal and Pompey allowed James Poole to break clear for the second. Greg Rutherford added a third in stoppage-time.

Whittingham was frustrated with the nature of the goals.

Pompey’s caretaker boss said: ‘It’s so disappointing.

‘It’s disappointing because we lost, we had the chances to score goals and gave bad goals away.

‘You can coach all week but you can’t legislate for those mistakes.

‘Dan Butler made a mistake for the third goal when we were chasing the game.

‘I haven’t got a problem with that, but the other goals were so poor to give away.’
