John Gosden has pointed to the form of Arctic Cosmos as he prepares Michelangelo for a St Leger assault.
Prior to winning the 2010 Classic at Doncaster, Arctic Cosmos stayed on for third in the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
Michelangelo produced a similar performance when finishing behind Noble Mission and Encke in the Group 3 contest on the Downs at the end of July.
After he was sent off the 6/4 favourite, many saw that run by the Galileo colt as something of a disappointment.
But Gosden, who trains both from his Newmarket headquarters, disagrees.
He reckons the latter can follow in his stable-mate’s footsteps and give ante-post favourite Camelot a real test in the St Leger.
The trainer said: ‘Michelangelo is fine and has done nothing wrong in his four races.
‘He was third in the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood which is not everybody’s track.
‘He was staying on well at the end of that race and so did Arctic Cosmos before winning the Ladbrokes St Leger two years ago.’
Michelangelo is currently priced at 11/1 to win Doncaster’s blue riband event on Saturday (3.40pm).
Camelot is the overwhelming favourite – at 4/11 – to take the final Classic of the campaign and complete the English Triple Crown after wins in the 2,000 Guineas and Derby.
