Leighton Aspell is hoping the Christmas cheer extends into Boxing Day.

The Pulborough-based jockey is set to ride Spirit Oscar in the Bob ‘The Hen’ Gray – Not Again Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle on Fontwell’s annual festive card (1.30pm).

And having joined forces with the five-year-old mare to win on her racecourse debut at Lingfield last month, Aspell is gunning to repeat the trick in West Sussex.

A winner in Irish points, Spirit Oscar switched to Oliver Sherwood’s Upper Lambourn yard earlier this year.

Connections were pleased with her winning debut – but reckon there is more to come from the daughter of Oscar.

The ground is currently rated at heavy at Fontwell, with the recent torrential downpours taking their toll.

Track chiefs are hoping the next 48 hours remain dry, although the seven races on the Boxing Day meeting will still take some winning.

Gates open at 10.30am, with the first race off at 12.20pm and the final contest going to post at 3.50pm.
