Theatrical Star proved his stamina with a superb triumph in the Axio Special Works Handicap Chase at Fontwell yesterday.

The eight-year-old son of King’s Theatre, who is trained by Colin Tizzard, held off the challenge of Global Power to win the three-and-a-quarter-mile battle by a neck.

Fruity O’Rooney was a distant third as the two scrapped for glory in the £12,000 feature race.

Theatrical Star’s triumph, which justified his position as the 4/5 market-leader, delighted his owners Brocade Racing.

It was an afternoon to remember for the Taunton-based group after they had taken the 32Red On The App Store Juvenile Hurdle with 5/2-shot Bidourey, who is trained by David Pipe.

But it was the 134-rated Theatrical Star who was the hero as he underlined his staying power with victory off top weight in the hands of Brendan Powell.

Brocade Racing’s Garth Broom said: ‘We always thought he was a stayer but this was the furthest he has gone. It was a true test.’

Meanwhile, Ballheigue Bay made a fine start to life over fences with a 4/1 triumph in the 32Red.com Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase.

Meetmeatthemoon took the 32Red Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at 7/4 for Philip Hobbs.

The JAM Electrical Supporting Love You Hospital Handicap Hurdle was won by Aficionado at 9/4 before two 16/1 winners completed the card which survived a morning inspection.

Sitting Back won the 32RedPoker.com Handicap Chase and Upham Running, who is trained in Upham by Kate Buckett, claimed the Free Bets At raceclear.co.uk Handicap Hurdle.
