Fontwell will have to wait a little longer for their first action of 2014.

Officials at the West Sussex track were yesterday forced to cancel a third consecutive meeting, after the course failed a morning inspection.

The abandonment of tomorrow’s card comes hot on the heels of two racedays in January, which also fell foul of torrential rain.

A total of 5mm of rain fell in the 24 hours prior to yesterday’s 9am inspection.

That figure brought the tally for February up to 108mm, while the track has been battered by 524mm since December 14.

Fontwell will now switch their focus to the meeting on Sunday, February 23 – the track’s most valuable card of the whole campaign.

The feature race on the card is the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle, which was won last season by the Paul Nicholls-trained Prospect Wells.

Gates open at 11.30am, with the first race at 2.10pm.
