South-coast sailing starlets Jess Lavery and Megan Brickwood are celebrating bronze-medal success at the 2015 470 Junior World Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Lavery, from Emsworth Sailing Club, and Brickwood, from Hayling Island Sailing Club – members of the British sailing team’s podium potential squad – went in to the event with a reputation to defend, having won silver last year at Cervia (Italy).

At the start of day two, the girls were lying in second place, but subsequently a penalty for being over the line, coupled with two more results out of the top 10, left them lying fourth overall before the all-important double-points medal race.

Hopes of a place on the podium appeared dead in the water when third-placed Chile claimed the final race win, but with the South Americans penalised for being over the line at the start, it was bronze for Lavery and Brickwood.
