Gemma Spofforth and Katy Sexton missed out on podium places in the 200m backstroke final at the British Championships.

Portsmouth Northsea’s Spofforth finished sixth in a time of 2min 13.80sec, while her former club-mate Sexton, from Copnor, was eighth in 2:14.96.

The race was won by Spofforth’s close friend Lizzie Simmonds, who clocked 2:08.67.

Former Portsmouth High School pupil Spofforth had already booked her place at this summer’s Olympic Games, though, after claiming gold in the 100m backstroke final on Monday.
