Portsmouth celebrated promotion at the opening sitting volleyball grand prix of the season.

The Harbour School, Tipner-based outfit topped the rankings in tier two of the prestigious event at Ashcombe Volleyball Centre, Dorking.

They remained unbeaten throughout the action-packed day, winning all three of their games to take their place among the nations’ top-ranked teams.

Portsmouth’s didn’t have it all their own way, though, with Essex Pirates making them work for their final victory to seal promotion.

They sent the match into a third set.

But Portsmouth’s experience came through in the end to win 2-1 (25-14, 15-25, 15-12).

Before that, the locals won their two previous games without losing a set.

They defeated runners-up H4H Phoenix B 2-0 (25-12, 25-16) and Wyverns (25-9, 25-17).

The second grand prix event of the season takes place at the National Volleyball Centre, Kettering, this Sunday.

There, Portsmouth will take on tier-one winners from the opening weekend of fixtures, East London Lynx, Newcastle Staffs, Lincoln Imps and Help 4 Heroes Phoenix A.

The team train at the Harbour School every Monday (7-9pm).

Anyone who is interested in giving sitting volleyball a go is invited to come along.

The first training session is free, with a £3 charge for every night after that.
