JERMAIN Defoe struck twice as Pompey grabbed a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Birmingham City.
Pompey got off to the perfect start as they led 2-0 inside the first eight minutes as Defoe took his tally to five goals in five games since his January move from Spurs.
The England hitman bagged his first from the penalty spot, after David Murphy was adjudged to have handled Milan Baros' cross.
And he was on hand again just two minutes later to poke home from a yard out.
Sulley Muntari's curling shot was parried into the path of Baros and his shot from the rebound forced a fine save from Maik Taylor, only for Defoe to pounce inside the six-yard box.
But City hit back almost instantly as Fabrice Muamba tapped in from close range, following Liam Ridgewell's flick-on at a corner.
And the visitors were back on level terms just before half-time as Sebastian Larsson curled home a superb free-kick.
But Pompey grabbed the lead again just four minutes after the restart as Hermann Hreidarsson was on hand to rifle home from loose ball in the box, while Kanu wrapped things up in stoppage time with a fine diving header from a Pedro Mendes cross.
