JERMAIN Defoe struck twice as Pompey grabbed a hard-fought 4-2 victory over Birmingham City.

Pompey got off to the perfect start as they led 2-0 inside the first eight minutes as Defoe took his tally to five goals in five games since his January move from Spurs.

The England hitman bagged his first from the penalty spot, after David Murphy was adjudged to have handled Milan Baros' cross.

And he was on hand again just two minutes later to poke home from a yard out.

Sulley Muntari's curling shot was parried into the path of Baros and his shot from the rebound forced a fine save from Maik Taylor, only for Defoe to pounce inside the six-yard box.

But City hit back almost instantly as Fabrice Muamba tapped in from close range, following Liam Ridgewell's flick-on at a corner.

And the visitors were back on level terms just before half-time as Sebastian Larsson curled home a superb free-kick.

But Pompey grabbed the lead again just four minutes after the restart as Hermann Hreidarsson was on hand to rifle home from loose ball in the box, while Kanu wrapped things up in stoppage time with a fine diving header from a Pedro Mendes cross.

A well fought win over a team fighting for their lives. Thought Defoe and Baros worked well together, in fact that was the best Baros has played so far for Pompey.

Play Up Pompey.

I really thought that we would show signs of a hangover post Manure. This is a really good sign, it still keeps us in contention for a Top 5 finish, which would be awesome.

agree with Perm, Baros worked well ,lots of runs taking defenders with him, creating space, B'ham no easy pushover, Villa will be tough too, but we can turn them over, come on you Blues....

Great result last night. I agree with the posts above Baros and Defoe are starting to work well together, Sol and Distan were on top form again and needed to be was impressed by Birmingham they kept fighting and played well. But we came back and got the 3 points, Thought Diop looked awful again he cant play out on the right and his confidence looks at rock bottom. Was surprised Davis never made the bench starting to think there is more to him being left out other than for footballing reasons? Another 3 points on sat and we could be in for europe on two fronts! Great result! I can't see us finishing above Everton or Liverpool though, meaning the cup is our only chance for europe.
If Cardiff somehow manage to win the cup, will that make 6th place in the league a European spot again? Or will the euro spot go to the runners up?

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Should salary caps be introduced to stop the threat of a financial crisis in football?
Yes - our game is in danger of going bust
Yes - but only because it will give Pompey more of a chance to compete with the big four
It would be too hard to implement
No - leave football how it is
