Pompey's Fratton Park campaign got off to a losing start as champions Manchester United edged a 1-0 victory.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side grabbed the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute, but there were questions over the goalscorer, despite Darren Fletcher taking the credit from his team-mates.

Patrice Evra burst forward from left-back, provided a dangerous cross and Sol Campbell and Fletcher slid in, David James was wrong-footed and Sylvain Distin was unable to keep the ball out as he hammered it into the roof of his own net.

It was scant reward for a fine first-half display from the Blues, but United stepped up a gear after the break and dominated the remainder of the contest.

Although Pompey prop up the early table, they showed enough signs that they will soon be back in the points to get their season up and running.

United - along with Chelsea last weekend - will surely contest the Premier league title again this season.

Just got back from the game and it was a better performance tonight.

A few things though:-

1, We need someone that can cross a ball, coz we ain't got anyone thats any good that can produce that killer ball.
2, We are crying out for a quality centre midfielder, coz Davis was way out of his depth, why oh why did we get rid of Muntari!!
3, Diop played quite well but Redknapp needs to play him in the middle and not out wide, especially when we've got some quick wingers on loan.

Anyway at least we started to play better and thats the two best teams in europe out of the way for a while.

Hopefully there will be a few new arrivals this week, we need them!!

Pedro Mendes is already putting in man of the match performances for Rangers. That was a big big mistake.

Much better performance. United passed the ball well and we gave it back too easily. Tevez for all his quality has got the same level of integrity as Ronaldo trying to get players booked or sent off by rolling around. Chris Foy was abysmal and bordered on cheating though I think United deserved their win overall. I think the wing back idea worked reasonably well for us and we will blow away lesser teams with the quality we have. The top 4 will still prevail but we will hold our own provided we work as hard as we did against Man U and particularly the first half.

I thought we looked awful tonight,Man Utd basicly played this game as if it was a practice match.
They were in complete control.
I hate to say this but l think that we are merely going to rely on hoofing the ball up to Crouch all season.
Harry said we needed quality players, but the ones that we have managed to get are really Championship quality.
I reckon its going to be a hard old slog this season.
I just hope that we can get someone in before the transfer deadline.

Come on peeps - its not all doom and gloom. The boys played very well in the 1st half and were so unlucky not to get something out of it before half time. Shame we didnt keep the same intensity in the 2nd half but against most teams in the division we would of been 2 up by half time and game over. I still think Harry will find the magic to ensure Defoe and Crouch work. Need a positive result against Everton and my goodness we are definately capable. My prediction: Everton 1 Pompey 2 (Play up Pompey)

I saw some good signs from us tonight but as has been said, we have no one who can cross a ball. Little needs be in the team asap to give us more width and while we persist in having attacking full backs we will continue to get caught out in defence. Sol simply isn't quick enough anymore to cover them and Kaboul needs time to settle in. I'd also like to see Sahar given a run. Utaka has continued last seasons form- hopeless. Harry let him go.

In my opinion we did ok. far better than last week by a clear mile,The first half was good we got into them and tracked very well, except when Diop/Johnson went to sleep for the goal. Defoe and Crouch were up against the best 2 centre halfs in the league last night and it was always going to be hard to get anything from them, and with some outragous decisions from Man u fan Foy.
We will be ok the players fitness is improving after what must go down as the worst pre-season schedule in history.
Dont get me wrong there is still a lot to work on especially the way we seem to surrender possesion so easily.
Thomas came on and did well last night he showed the energy and work rate needed from a winger, and if we can get the same on the right we will create a lot more.
100% improvement on last week. PUP

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
