STEVE WILSON brings you all the action from Eastlands.
JERMAIN Defoe was handed the lone striker's role for the first time in his Pompey career as Harry Redknapp reverted to the successful 4-5-1 away formation that has been so successful this season.

That meant recalls for the fit-again duo John Utaka - who returned to the right flank - and Lassana Diarra, who made up a three-man midfield alongside Papa Bouba Diop and Sulley Muntari.

Glen Johnson failed to shake off a virus and was not in the 16, so Lauren was drafted in at right-back.

There was no place among the 16 for Kanu, while Sean Davis dropped to the bench.

City, meanwhile, had defensive problems of their own with Brazilian playmaker Elano asked to fill in at right-back. Former Pompey star Benjani led the one-man attack.

City: Hart, Elano (Caicedo, 90), Corluka, Dunne (Williamson, 54), Ball, Vassell, Fernandes, Johnson, Ireland (Geovanni, 75), Petrov, Benjani. Subs: Isaakson, Castillo.

Pompey: James, Lauren, Distin, Campbell, Hreidarsson, Utaka (Aubey, 75), Bouba Diop (Baros, 75), Diarra, Muntari, Kranjcar (Davis, 83), Defoe. Subs: Begovic, Nugent.

00: Kick-off

02 - Papa Bouba Diop is the first man to try his luck from distance as his 35-yarder has City keeper Joe Hart making a real meal of things. From the resulting corner, Sylvain Distin should have done much better as his downward header bounces tamely wide.

11 - GOAL - Absolute howler from David James and Sol Campbell as Benjani nips in between the two of them when they should have taken care of it.
Stephen Ireland drags his shot across goal and Darius Vassell slides in, despite the appeals for offside. Replays suggest there was only Campbell on the goal-line, but the goal stands.

13 - GOAL - It's 2-0 to City as more poor defending from Pompey allows Martin Petrov way too much space in the box and he pokes home with a deflected right-foot shot. Dear oh dear.

17 - Hermann Hreidarsson ventures forward and gigs out a cross but Bouba Diop cannot get over it and comes crashing down.

24 - GOAL - Pompey are back in the game as John Utaka pulls one back. Lassana Diarra clips over a cross, Jermain Defoe mistimes his header, but Utaka is there to poke his shot beyond Joe Hart from close range.

29 - Deep cross from Elano finds Benjani making a run off teh back of the Pompey defence, but his header is straight into James' gloves.

32 - The dangerous Petrov picks out Benjani again, but the Zimbabwean's shot is well saved by James. Pompey are all over the place defensively and Campbell and James are still arguing about the first goal.

41 - Disaster for Pompey as Hreidarsson is sent off for pulling back Vassell as he went to race through on goal. It's harsh, but replays how that he did haul him back. And as last man, he has to go.

45 - Benjani lays off for Vassell who tries his luck with a spectacular curler, but James is equal to it and tips it away.

HALF TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 2 POMPEY 1

46 - We're under way again, Sulley Muntari has slotted into left-back and Pompey are playing with four men across midfield.

52 - Good break by Pompey as Muntari skips forward, releases Utaka who supplies a fine cross, just inches over Defoe's head.

54 - Richard Dunne is off with an injury and Sam Williamson is on to replace him.

55 - Benjani should have made it 3-1 there, but fires over from six yards.

56 - And Pompey should now be level after hitting both posts within a few seconds as first Muntari's drive is pushed on to the upright by Hart and Utaka's follow-up strikes the outside of the other post moments later.

61 - Vassell wastes a great chance as Muntari slips at a crucial moment, but the City striker's finish is poor as he hits it into the side netting.

63 - Great break from Pompey as James bowls it out 60 yards, Kranjcar bursts into the box, his lay-off finds Bouba Diop, but the shot soars over the crossbar.

65 - Williamson is booked for a late challenge on Utaka and now Joe Jordan is having a row with someone from City. It's all happening here today.

70 - Now Lauren's in the book for an ugly-looking challenge on Williamson.

74 - GOAL - Benjani makes it 3-1 and he shrugs off Distin and fires past James. He's as good as his word and doesn't celebrate the goal.

75 - Milan Baros and Lucien Aubey are on for Papa Bouba Diop and John Utaka. City also make a change with Geovanni on for Stephen Ireland.

80 - Baros has a great chance to pull another one back as he ghosts into the box, but he can't beat Hart from close range.

83 - Last throw of the dice for Pompey as Sean Davis replaces Kranjcar.

88 - Good stuff from Aubey as he bombs down the left, pulls back for Davis and a fine save from Hart ensures the two-goal cushion remains.

90 - FULL TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 3 POMPEY 1

What an absolute pile of toilet!! Certainly given a lesson in passing to you own team members by City today. And WTF is Diop doing still trying to score rugby conversions? Holy toilet, one of the biggest games of the season which was one the the team should have been right up for....and they pull out that pile of crap!

Well, that's 5th spot gone now. Focus now has to be on the FA Cup Final. Played better in the second half I thought and hard to tell at times which team had 10 men.
Play Up Pompey

Fair comment Scott, I'm just very disappointed that's all, we were very slow off the mark and really did not get anything going until it was way too late. 5th in the league is over now, it's a battle for 6th or 7th - which is better than last season of course, but when you have blue blood coursing through your veins you just want better and you want more right! Too many had their heads at Wembley already I think, which is a bad bad thing, especially when we still have three games left in the league. PUP...better result next time let's hope.

That was absolutely awful. Why can everyone but Harry see that Diop is a complete waste of space, gave the ball away almost every time. Davis did more that him in 10 minutes. I would rather start davis or mendes for the final over Diop. Defoe shouldnt play up front alone and we cannot use the final as an excuse. There Proffessionals getting paid too much, so there is no excuse for such a poor show. We need 5/6 new players next season. GET RID OF DIOP! Play up Pompey x

maybe after today harry will realise that diop is not up to it, at least he is statuesque at worst he is immobile. agree with pompey1991 davis and also mendes offer far more in effort, mobility and not least ability. trouble with harry when he gets an idea in his head about a player he does not seem to see any other.

I think you are all being to harsh on Diop, he was better today, but definitely needs to improve on completing passes. Muntari was not good in the first half but much better in the second. We really missed Glen Johnson today, this is where games and points are won and lost, if you do not have strength and depth. I know Lauren has not played much, but particularly as he has commented this week about lack of opportunities, when it comes your way you have to take it. Unfortunatley he did not today and is not a fit replacement for Glen. I think I would have left Utaka on he looked more likely to score than Baros. I also think Campbell will go in the summer and we need to be thinking about a replacement for him. Defoe definitely needs a strike partner it could be Utaka if given enough of a chance, but Crouchie would be fantastic. I think today may have cost us 5th, but we must let chasing teams overtake. I know everyone says we should be concentrating on the cup, but we still have to go and win it to get into Europe, if we don't we could be looking back on this game and the Newcastle one with a lot of regret. Proud of the way they battled and kept creating though!

Agree with comments about Diop. that clearance for 3 points which gave City a corner was priceless. he really is not good enough but then Muntari isn't either compared to davis and Mendes. looks as if HR has made his mind up about these 4 but i would put davis and mendes in ahead of Muntari and Diop every time.

Time seemed to catch up with campbell today as Benji ran him ragged. Defoe can't play on his own up front. Howler from Jamo but after the way he's played for us this season easily forgiven.

Enjoyed watching Joe Jordan having some verbals with the City coaching staff and Tony adams looking on just laughing at them.

City were not that great and we have probably blown the top 5 finish now but win the last 3 and we might just nick it if Everton draw with Villa next week.

Only real positives were Utaka is starting to look interested again and Baros looked lively when he came on. defoe was good as always. Niko and Diarra not at their best but they do make the odd pass that can create that winning opportunity. Missed Johnson too.

It has still been a great season for us in Prem and if we win the cup then it will be a brilliant season but if we blow the final and don't come 5th it will all have been in vain even if our neighbours go down.

It was a big mistake playing Defoe on his own. He is not a Benjani. I don't remember Defoe troubling the City defenders the way Benjani caused panic to Campbell and Distin. Benjani was always going to come good. Ironic that it should be against his old team. Even Diarra who after his first few showings for the Blues, I thought was the best player I'd seen in a Pompey shirt, looked out of salts and gave the ball away too easily. He played too deep and was not allowed to roam the way he did prior to his injury. All in all a terribly disjointed and disappointing performance and result, only showing Rednapp, I hope, how much we need two quality strikers in addition to Defoe. I have never liked Diop. Mendes or Davis would have done a better job. But Rednapp does not see it the way most people see it. Nothing new there.

Can Linvoy still have an impact at Pompey?
Yes - he can still be a first-team player
He'll be a useful squad player
He'll be nothing more than a fringe player
Let's see how he overcomes his injury first
