POMPEY emerged victorious from their Euro shootout with Aston Villa.
Jermain Defoe's opener and a bizarre Nigel Reo-Coker own goal gave Harry Redknapp's men a 2-0 win.

But it could have been a lot more comfortable for the Blues as they turned on the style at Fratton Park.

Pompey never looked in danger and treated the sellout crownd to some magnificent football.

It capped a magnificent eight days for Redknapp's men as they picked up their third win on the bounce.

Defoe's sixth goal for his new club, in front of the watching England manager Fabio Capello, came with a sublime 12th minute lob over Scott Carson.

The second had an air of comedy about it as Carson smashed his clearance into Reo-Coker and the ball flew into the net.

The win kept up the pressure on Everton in fifth place.

The only bad news for Pompey was seeing Sulley Muntari sent off for a second bookable offence. Olof Mellberg followed him late on after his second caution.

4th/5th could be a reality. Liverpools next 3 games, Man Utd, Everton & Arsenal. Everton still have Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Villa (even though we beat them I think they will give Everton a good game). If we believe and keep producing the results the team is capable of then we have every chance of those positions. PUP

It just shows how important the loss to Everton was to our Europe chances. A win and we would have been level with them now, a draw and we would be 3 points behind them but 6 points, whilst not impossible really means we are going to have to win every game and Everton falter. The FA Cup looks easier- what a thing to be saying- an FA cup an easier option. That would be a very rare occurance for any team.

We seemed to play on the break during most of the second half and although they pressed us hard, I always felt we'd score a third each time we attacked. Defoe's goal was superbly created and taken while Diarra really oozes that rare quality of producing both power and graceful all-action performances.

Do you think Muntari getting sent off & Papa being booked for silly things had anything to with them missing 2 games Spurs & Wigan, but are both OK (if picked) for the semi's, reminds me of David Becham for England, just a thought, PUP, keep me smiling whilst being glotted over by happy taffs

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
