Pompey suffered penalty heartache in the Community Shield today.
The Blues lost 3-1 to Premier League champions Manchester United on spot-kicks after the game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes at Wembley.

The lottery went United's way as Lassana Diarra, Glen Johnson andArnold Mvuemba all missed from 12 yards.

Jermain Defoe was the only Pompey player to convert his effort.

Carlos Tevez, Michael Carrick and Ryan Giggs all did the business for United.

The match proved to be a fairly tight and keenly fought encounter.

United carved out the better chances over the course of the game and Darren Fletcher will wonder how he didn't score from a couple of yards after 35 minutes.

Pompey's best chance fell to Peter Crouch who miscued after Vidic dallied over dealing with Papa Bouba Diop's cross with 17 minutes left.

A crowd of 84,808 watched the curtain-raiser to the season.

Now Pompey have to pick themselves up for the Premier League opener against Chelsea next Sunday.

Surely now Mr Gaydamak you can see we are very short on width!! we need a couple of good wingers to support the front two badly...so lets spend some money, you could always borrow some off your old man, hes got a few quid!! also maybe we could do with practicing penalities!!!!

Pompey were totally outplayed and not conceding a goal in open play was hard to believe. So what? United have got the funds but we've got the supporters and Harry. But we do need someone who can take on defenders - maybe SWP would be that someone?

Spend the last 15-30 mins of practice each time practising free kicks, for they are very important and have won and in this case lost matches.
The defence was there since we held them scoreless, the offence needs to step up since it all starts for real next week and Chelsea will be watching the match over and over again to find your weaknesses and attacking them.
PLAY UP POMPEY.

I don't think we were out played at all. Ok we lost on penalties, but a lot to feel positive about. Well done pompey, and thank god the new season is here. PUP!

Crawley Blue, what planet are you on? You don't think we were outplayed? We were completely outplayed, though I also think that we need to allow for the fact that we played the Champions of Europe. We looked slow at the back and lacked width, but it can only get better.

agree oz, we were 2nd best to everything, diarra and jamo stood out, we did look so unfit, kranky and jonhson, diop please dont play him on the right again, he loses the ball so much.........yes we played the champions, but the truth is we all know it we need wingers and quick, lets not forget one week to the season starts and we need to improve..fast

I stand by my comment. I went to old trafford in January and they out played us then (we were lucky to loose 2 nil), but considering they are the best club in Europe I think todays match was ok - don't forget its pre-season. I think there was some good stuff on offer. Our passing was a bit poor but all in all things are looking good.

im not slating u, but remember we start the season in a week, harry bleats on about suppling are dream team defoe and couch and today we gave em nothing, weve got chelsea next week, with the same tactics and no width we risk getting hammered, u cant play a centre midfielder who loses the ball constantly on the right wing, the team looks good on paper the squad as it stands does worry me?

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
