Lassana Diarra and Jermain Defoe were the goal heroes as Pompey secured a 2-0 Euro success.
In the club's first ever European clash, Pompey delivered the goods in spectacular style as they marched to a victory that sets them up nicely for qualification for the group phase of the competition.

At a rocking Fratton Park, Pompey took the upper hand early on to put the visitors under pressure only for goalkeeper Nilson to make two exceptional saves to deny Defoe.

But he was powerless to stop a fabulous Diarra strike as the French midfielder drove into the box to play a neat one-two with Defoe and drill a half-volled inside the near post to send Fratton Park wild.

Vitoria wasted a golden opportunity to equalise before the break as Fajardo blazed a penalty over the crossbar after Sol Campbell had been adjudged to have wrestled Roberto to the ground.

But Pompey returned the favour early in the second half as Defoe saw his spot-kick pushed away by Nilson after the striker was tripped in the box.

But the England man had the final say for the Blues as he crashed home a fine volley after a pinpoint cross from the impressive Nadir Belhadj to seal the 2-0 win.

Totally agree with you HarryStotle.....but more than anything else he reminded me of players that play with their heart (taylor springs to mind)...he looked like his life depended on his performance and that was so nice to see.

Where does Harry find them? I mean he's an Algerian playing for Lens...hardly in the main shop window of European football. Can't wait until he's unleashed on the Premiership. Wonder what poor Herman is thinking. Probably, 'oh s**t!'

Having watched the dross served up at Fratton for many years can it get any better than this ?
I agree Utaka is not the best player in the side but dont agree he is a waste of time. If his shot had gone in instead of hitting the post everyone would have hailed it as a great strike, which it was just a bit unlucky. At the moment he just seems to lack a little confidence but he is certainly trying very hard.
Which is more than can be said for some of the dross who have worn the Pompey shirt.
So lets get behind all of our current players because they all work and try as hard as they can every game and I for one just love watching them all play !
Keep it up Harry cos I cant wait for the next game !

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
