Pompey gunned down by City
POMPEY'S hopes of a fifth-place finish in the Premier League suffered another body blow after they crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Manchester City.
A disastrous first half from the Blues gave them a mountain to climb after two goals in two minutes - from Darius Vassell and Martin Petrov - put Pompey in big trouble after just 13 minutes.
John Utaka pulled one back midway through the half to spark hopes of a recovery, but Hermann Hreidarsson's red card just before half-time effectively ended the fightback as he pulled down Vassell.
Although Pompey nearly found an equaliser when both Niko Kranjcar and Utaka hit the post after the break, a goal from ex-Pompey striker Benjani wrapped up the points 16 minutes from time.
The dream of fifth place is not yet over, but it now looks increasingly unlikely with just three games left.
