THE UNTHINKABLE has happened: Pompey have beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford to book their place in the FA Cup semi-finals.
Sulley Muntari was the matchwinner with a penalty 12 minutes from time as Pompey turned in an incredible defensive performance.
Substitute Milan Baros was upended by United's substitute keeper Tomasz Kuszczak as he bore down on goal and the referee had no alternative, but to send the keeper off.
That left Rio Ferdinand facing the penalty and he could do little as Muntari tucked home with ease.
Pompey will admit that they rode their luck, but they capitalised on their chance when it came their way.
Although it was an even first half, Pompey breathed a sigh of relief when referee Martin Atkinson waved away claims for a United penalty when Cristiano Ronaldo tumbled in the area after going shoulder to shoulder with Sylvain Distin.
But United turned up the heat after the break and looked certain to score, until Distin somehow denied Michael Carrick on the line, before David James made a superb save to tip Patrice Evra's shot on to the post.
Pompey's travelling supporters were fully entitled to sing 'We're off to Wembley'.
