Steve Wilson with the action as it happened at Fratton Park.
HARRY Redknapp made two changes to the side that went down to a 4-0 loss at Chelsea last week.

Out went the injured Niko Kranjcar, while Hermann Hreidarsson's place went to new loan signing Armand Traore.

Into the midfield came the fit-again Se
an Davis, but Pompey's midfield contained no natural wide players.

United, meanwhile, restored Brazilian midfielder Anderson to their midfield, but there was no Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick or Owen Hargreaves.

Wayne Rooney partnered Carlos Tevez up front, but there were none of the familiar names among the substitutes other than Gary Neville.

Pompey paraded the FA Cup around Fratton Park before the game with two stewards handed the task of showing the famous silverware to the supporters.

Although the lid fell off the trophy as one of the minders stumbled on the tunnel steps, he quickly regained his footing and the fans showed their appreciation.

POMPEY: James, Johnson, Distin, Campbell, A Traore (Thomas, 56), Bouba Diop, Davis (Utaka, 66), Diarra, Kaboul, Crouch, Defoe. Subs: Ashdown, Lauren, Hreidarsson, Mvuemba, Sahar.

MAN UTD: Van der Sar, Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand, Evra, Fletcher, O'Shea, Scholes, Anderson (Possebon, 76), Rooney, Tevez. Subs: Kuszczak, Neville, F da Silva, R da Silva, Gibson, Campbell.

00 - Kick-off.

01 - Great start by Pompey as Papa Bouba Diop surges forward and flashes a shot inches wide with a 25-yard strike. There were just 12 seconds on the clock as the Senegalese midfielder grazes Edwin Van der Sar's upright.

04 - United show their teeth with a fast break down the right flank as Wes Brown's cross finds Wayne Rooney, only for the England striker to fire his shot into David James' midriff.

07 - It's an unusual selection from Redknapp with Sylvain Distin pushed to left-back, Younes Kaboul and Sol Campbell in central defence and Armand Traore making his debut on the left wing.

13 - Van der Sar races 50 yards out of his goal to deal with a ball over the top and looks like he's in trouble until the referee gifts him a free-kick for a supposed shove by Jermain Defoe. Generous that one.

14 - Big penalty shout as a Sean Davis cross hits Nemanja Vidic. Replays suggest it might have struck his hand, but that would have been extremely harsh is that one had been given.

18 - Bouba Diop is in the book for a tackle from behind on Tevez. Paul Scholes tries his luck from the free-kick with a swerving drive but James makes a clean catch.

25 - Tremendous last-ditch tackle from Patrice Evra denies Peter Crouch his first goal on his return to Pompey after good work from Defoe. Evra slides in and Van der Sar pushes the ball away. Kaboul heads narrowly wide from the corner. This is a cracking game so far.

32 - GOAL - POMPEY 0 MAN UTD 1. United are 1-0 up with their first real threat on goal. Evra crosses, Campbell and Darren Fletcher slide in and Distin can't keep it out as it wrongfoots James and crosses the line. Unlucky for Distin who will probably be credited with an own goal, despite Fletcher's claims for it.

41 - That should have been 2-0 as Rooney produces a fine piece of close control to spin past Kaboul and blast a low shot inches wide of the post. James was beaten there, but so was the upright.

44 - Brown is shown a yellow card for a wild lunge on Traore.

45 - HALF TIME: POMPEY 0 MAN UTD 1

46 - We're off and running again. No changes from either side.

56 - The frantic pace of the first half has dropped off and Pompey make their first change. Jerome Thomas is on for Traore, who has made a very promising debut.

60 - United have started to dominate possession now, but Pompey string a few passes together and Thomas tries his luck from range and Van der Sar beats it away.

66 - John Utaka replaces Sean Davis and Bouba Diop moves into a central role.

71 - Pompey survive a double scare as Fletcher's volley is blocked by Glen Johnson, while Vidic goes close with a header from the resultant corner.

72 - Bouba Diop lets fly from 35 yards, but Van der Sar makes a comfortable save.

76 - First change for United as Rodrigo Possebon replaces Anderson.

80 - Another dodgy free-kick for United from the referee as Tevez bundles into Kaboul and goes to ground. Defoe is in the book for arguing with the man in black.

86 - Pompey still haven't quite been able to carve out that one clear-cut chance and time is running out.

90 - Fletcher's the next man to get a yellow card for having a go at the linesman. United look set to take the points.

FULL TIME. POMPEY 0 MAN UTD 1.

2 tough games out of the way, and the season can now start (although away to Everton not the easiest game). A better showing but could it of been worse than last week?

Thought Davis had a poor game, but he was only just back from injury, although saying that the centre midfielders were on a hiding to nothing the way they played....

As for Diop - (was asked to watch his performance) he doesn't like playing wide right and was lucky to end the game on the park! He had 2 shots 1 on target, made 30 passes 27 to a team mate (1 50/50 through ball that vidic beat crouch to). He won 8 headers (1 was retained by a pompey player) Ball watched twice (evra's cross) Got one key tackle in, and won possession once, lost possession three times (although Thomas' pass was a bit short). So to say he has no ability and cant pass is rather harsh. I wouldn't say he had a bad game but like most of the team can't say he had a good one either.

First half was much better than last week but second half was very poor albeit against top side. We have no goal threat whatsoever. Still no width and no crosses. Why cant we put corners and free kicks in the box where we have a number of very tall players. No midfield imagination and Distin is not a left back. 7 straight league defeats including last season equals Championship football.

I think we will survive but only just. If we don't score and get something at Everton which could easily happen then its psychological and we will be in big trouble straight away.

At least Sol was much better tonight and at least Traore and Thomas run which is more than can be said about Kranjkar. Get rid of him asap if anyone is foolish enough to pay decent money for him and buy a proper winger and get mendes back !!

agree totally........much better.......and we did have more attacks down the wings, traore and thomas gave us speed and trickery....(just obviously a little unfit.......i reckon with 1 or 2 addition inthe middle of the park we could be ok.......note again crouch and defoe hasd nothing tonight..........

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
