A motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital following a road incident.
The biker was taken to Southampton with serious head injuries after coming off his Vespa Piaggio PX 125 on the A27 at Portsbridge in Portsmouth.

He is believed to have suffered a puncture and the scooter was the only vehicle involved.

The rider suffered serious head and chest injuries. His female pillion passenger was also hurt but is not not to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The 58-year-old rider, from Petersfield, was treated by a BASICS doctor at the scene and then airlifted to Lords Hill in Southampton to be taken by land ambulance to the region's specialist neurological unit at Southampton General Hospital.

The incident happened at about 2.15pm on Friday afternoon and caused traffic chaos through the area.

Three hours later traffic was still backing up on the eastbound M27 past Junction 9, Whiteley.

By 4.40pm two eastbound lanes of the A27 were reopened.
